Edward Lincoln Matson Jr., 83, of Kent, died July 16 at New Milford Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Medora "Paddy" (Anderson) Matson.

Mr. Matson was born Oct. 25, 1928, in New Milford, son of the late Edward L. and Gertrude Ruth (Hall) Matson.

A lifelong resident of Kent, he attended local schools and was employed by the Connecticut State Highway Department for 32 years, retiring in 1989 with a perfect safety record. He was also caretaker for 50 years at Old Home Farms, Britton estate, in Kent.

Mr. Matson was a 50-year member of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department and a 50-year member of St. Luke's Lodge of Kent. He was also a member of the Kent Congregational Church and the Kent Grange.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mr. Matson is survived by a son, Edward L. Matson III, and his wife, Donna, of Kent; two daughters, Nancy Henderson, and her husband, Philip, of Asheville, N.C.; and Elizabeth Ohmen, of Asheville; five brothers, Ralph Matson and Douglas Matson, of Kent; Walter Matson, of Danbury; Samuel Matson, of Melbourne, Fla.; and Jay Matson, of Burwell, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Edward L. Matson IV, Jeremy Matson, Jonathan Matson, Thomas Henderson, Matson Henderson, Molly Ohmen and Thomas Ohmen. He was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Eriksen and Marian Scott.

A memorial service will take place Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Kent Congregational Church.

The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements.
