Edward H. Bates, 81, of New Milford, formerly of Danbury and Brookfield, died Oct. 21. He was the husband of Isabelle Bates.

Mr. Bates was born May 27, 1923, in South Carolina.

He was a volunteer fireman in Danbury and Brookfield for many years. In the 1950's and early 1960's he worked for the circulation department of The News-Times in Danbury. He did radio and TV repair on the side. He also worked for Scalzo's for a few years in the parts department. After retirement, he worked part-time doing security at Duracell.


Besides his wife, Mr. Bates is survived by two sons, Edward of New Milford and Stephen and his wife Fran of Alto, N.M.; two daughters,
Judie Douglas and her husband Richard of Chester, and Deborah Berrill and her husband Tom of Bristol; six grandchildren,
Allen Luke and his wife Toni of Weston, W.Va., Nick Campbell of Dallas, Kymberly, Samantha and Stephen of New Mexico, and Hope Berrill of Bristol; two great grandchildren, Kelsey and Justin Luke of West Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
