A free drug take-back day will take place June 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Western Connecticut Health Network Laboratory Patient Service Center in New Milford.

New Milford Hospital, in partnership with the New Milford TRIAD, the New Milford Police Department and the New Milford Substance Abuse Prevention Council, will co-sponsor the event at 120 Park Lane (Route 202).

Residents are encouraged to bring unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications in the original containers, including pills, capsules, tablets, topical creams, cough and cold products, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, metered-dose inhalers, thyroid hormones and naproxen.

The take-back is not able to accommodate syringes.

The effort is to discourage a common practice:Many people choose to flush old or unused medications down the toilet, inadvertently affecting the local water supply.

Others, in an attempt to treat a malady, use products that have passed the expiration date, potentially doing more harm than good.
