Dems laud passage of state gun control laws

To the editor:

Last week, Connecticut Democrats and Republicans came together and passed one of the nation's strictest gun control laws.

As New Milford Democrats, we thank these legislators for their commitment and perseverance in getting this measure passed, especially Rep. Richard Smith (R-New Fairfield) for his courageous vote in favor of the bill.

It is our hope Connecticut's new law will serve as an example for the rest of the country.

We support President Barack Obama, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen. Chris Murphy as well as Rep. Elizabeth Esty in their determination to pass strict gun control measures nationally.

As gun violence is one of the leading causes of death in people aged 1-19, we are disappointed our State Rep. Cecilia Buck-Taylor (R-67th) and state Sen. Clark Chapin (R-30th) voted "no."

We believe their vote is a disservice to all children and adults who are killed every day in the U.S. as a result of gun violence.

We urge New Milford residents to support Sen. Blumenthal and Sen. Murphy and Rep. Esty in their pursuit of a strong, national gun control bill.
