Brookfield advances

The Brookfield 12-year-old Cal Ripken travel baseball team defeated Bellow Falls, Vermont in the first game of Regionals on Saturday in Massachusetts. Brookfield took Bellow Falls by surprise with a 15-0 win in just four innings.

Ryan Korb went 3-for-3 with two home runs and a single. Kevin O'Connor and Tre Gause both went 2-for-2 with a double and single, and Ryan Rivas went 1-for-2 with a home run.

Korb was named player of the game.

Tomorrow Brookfield faces the winner of the Rhode Isalnd-New Hampshire game.

Danbury's Ryan Miguel pitched three solid innings, fanning four batters and allowing just three hits en route to an easy victory.

Closer Alex Johnson came in to finish the game, striking out two batters.

Danbury's offense was led by Nick Jones, who had a double and a single and three RBIs.

Teammates Garron Negron and Dan Coakley added two singles while Colin David and Isreal Duran each had a hit.

Danbury advances to face Ridgefield today at 4 p.m. to be played at the Old High School field in Ridgefield.

NEW LONDON -- The Southbury U15 baseball team opened the Babe Ruth State Tournament with a win over New London in a game played at Sal Amanti Field.

Brian Fay delivered a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning to give Southbury the boost it needed to seal the victory.

Adam Cherry earned the win for Southbury Dan Fein earned the save, recording the game's final five outs.

Southbury improves to 18-1 on the year and will take on Shelton tonight in New London.

Connecticut Titans claim tourney title

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Connecticut Titans won five straight games to sweep the inaugural Capital City Classic baseball tournament and USSSA State of Ohio Championship.

The tournament featured teams from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The Titans ran their record to 25-4 as they outscored their opponents 62-5 with precision pitching, explosive offense and flawless defense.

Stephen Dickerson improved his season record to 10-0 by winning the tournament opener 14-0 and the championship game 12-0 against Utica, Ohio. Cory Dean (6-0), Robbie Meerman (2-0) and Greg 'Ozzy' Ostner (2-2) each picked up wins in route to the Titans sweep, as Brian Baxter provided solid relief.

Offensively, the Titan firepower was provided by home runs off the bats of Meerman and Abraham Almonte.

Richie Rodriguez led the Titan attack with six hits, while Almonte complemented the effort with five hits. Manny Felix, Joe Roberti and Ostner each contributed four hits, while Meerman added three. Dean and and Justin Sullivan owned the base paths with three and four stolen bases respectively.

The Titans, recently recognized as the number one team in the Northeast, were invited to USA Baseball's 14U National Team Identification Series at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL in August. Players from this series will be selected to represent the USA 14U National Team in international competition.

Southport Headliners 6, Danbury Bulldogs 5

Danbury scored four runs in the sixth innings, but fell to Southport in the bottom of the seventh.

Cody Alves led Danbury with three hits and an RBI, C.J. Sousa had a hit and an RBI and Tanner Russell added a hit and stole two bases.
