To the Editor:

There has been so much negative publicity concerning New Milford High School.

We could all use some positive news; we don't usually get that.

Two young women who currently attend the University of Connecticut and were 2009 graduates of NMHS have earned the title of University Scholar.

This is the highest honor that can be bestowed on an undergraduate at the University of Connecticut, and only 19 students were named this year.

Congratulations, Alexandra Goetjen, 2009 NMHS valedictorian, and Christina Ostner, who was fourth in the Class of 2009.

Both of these young women feel a large part of this honor should go to Stephen Flanagan. They both had the good fortune to have been his students.

It is too bad current and future NMHS students will be deprived of that privilege.

Congratulations, Alexandra and Christina, and thank you, Mr. Flanagan, for guiding them on their educational journeys.
