College Notebook: Stamford's Wilson Player of Week for Kutztown St. football
Dontay Wilson (Stamford) got off to a big start with the Kutztown State football team. The senior was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the Week after rushing for a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-14 win against St. Anselm. Mario Pirolozzi (Trinity Catholic) started at right tackle for the losers.
Linda Velaj (Westhill) had the game-winning goal as the Bridgeport women's soccer team opened it season with a 3-2 win against Southern New Hampshire. Velaj, the preseason selection as East Coast Conference offensive player of the year, also had six shots in a scoreless tie with Philadelphia University.
Darien's Kailyn Hartmann (St. Luke's) had two saves in posting a shutout as Dickinson opened its women's soccer season with a 4-0 victory over Marymount. The senior also split time in goal in a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden.
Kiki Koroshetz (Brien McMahon) is a senior co-captain with the Colgate women's soccer team which beat Buffalo, lost to Niagara and tied Oregon to open the season.
Ali Espinol (Fairfield Ludlowe) started on defense as the New Haven women's soccer team beat Molloy, 2-0, and also saw as the Chargers downed Southern Connecticut, 1-0. Alison Ditolla (Trumbull) had a shot on goal for SCSU and also had a pair of shots in a win over Molloy,
Sofia Vallone (Brien McMahon) had a goal as the Brandeis women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 win over MIT.
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford) had her first career goal for Southern Connecticut (1-3) in a 5-1 field hockey loss to No. 9 Mansfield and then scored two goals in a 5-2 victory against St. Anselm.
She also saw action in losses to No. 3 Shippensburg and Franklin Pierce.
Katie Durkin (New Canaan) had two shots on goal as the Bucknell field hockey team rolled to a 6-1 win over Siena and the freshman also had a shot in a win over Vermont.
Devin Eppley (Darien) had 11 saves as the Salve Regina field hockey team lost to Wheaton and then had three saves in a shutout against Framingham State.
Kim Stow (Norwalk) had eight saves in goal as Sacred Heart dropped a 1-0 field hockey decision to Davidson, turned back six shots in a 3-2 loss to Davidson and had seven saves in a setback against Yale. Stephanie Fazio (Brien McMahon) had the lone goal for the Pioneers against Yale.
Devon Satnick (Brien McMahon) scored and Kelsey Flowers (Darien) started at forward for Denison in a season-opening 3-2 field hockey win against Wittenberg.
Freshman Annie Wilson (Darien) opened at forward for the Georgetown field hockey team in loss to 4-3 loss to Lock Haven and also had two shots in a setback against Davidson.
Katie Farrow (Brien McMahon) had a goal and Hayden Maloney (Brien McMahon) also saw action as the 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team opened its season with a 4-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan.
Molly Byrnes (Greenwich) had a shot on goal as the Fairfield field hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to UConn and then registered an assist in an overtime win against Ball State.
Kevin Donahue (Greenwich) had three saves to post the shutout as the Denison men's soccer team blanked Cedarville, 1-0, in overtime.
Freshman Phoebe Maglathlin (Darien) had seen action with the Duke volleyball team (2-1).
Jeff Swan (Fairfield Ludlowe) had an assist as Assumption (1-1) topped St. Thomas Aquinas in men's soccer.
