Minor Memorial Library on South Street in Roxbury will present "Closing the Word Gap: Improving Your Grandchildren's Vocabulary" Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m.

The program, funded by a grant from Connecticut Community Foundation, will address the recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics to "read aloud to children from birth" as a way of providing children's caregivers the tools and techniques to enhance vocabulary and other communications skills of preschoolers.

According to the AAP, studies show the word gap between children who have been read to and those who have not is a significant factor in future success.

Speakers and presenters will include Amy Dumoch, a speech pathologist; Ann Wescott, a special education teacher; Joan Stracks, a social worker; and John Rankin, a teacher.
