The Connecticut Community Foundation has awarded a grant to Roxbury's Minor Memorial Library for developing "Closing the Word Gap: Improving Preschoolers' Vocabulary."

The event is scheduled for Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the South Street library.

The program will address the recent recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics to read aloud to children from birth and will provide children's caregivers the tools and techniques with which to enhance the vocabulary and other key communications skills of preschoolers.

According to the academy, studies show the word gap between children who have been read to and those who have not is a significant factor in future success.

For parents, grandparents and other caregivers who agree reading to preschoolers is a great idea but who are not sure how to lure the children away from smartphones and tablets, a panel of librarians and other experts will present strategies and tips for keeping the children engaged.
