The First Congregational Church in New Milford is continuing to raise funds through its “Raise the Roof” campaign.

Church officials are hopeful community support will help the church raise an additional $200,000 to make the necessary extensive roof repairs on the historic meeting house that has graced the Village Green for 300 years.

More than $300,000 has already been donated to the campaign.

Funds will be used to repair the failing ceiling beam and restore the building’s structural integrity and remove the steel supports inside the sanctuary.

Church historian Ross Detwiler recently launched a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/nmchurch. The page offers a detailed description of the project and drone videos of the interior of the sanctuary.

A temporary steel structure has been in place for some time to support the roof. A new structural beam must be inserted “in the ceiling above the temporary structure,” according to the GoFundMe page.

The new beam will “span the entire meeting room and rest on re-straightened walls,” the page said.

A special mailing about the campaign and the project will be distributed in the community in the coming weeks.

Donations can be mailed to the First Congregational Church of New Milford and mailed to the church, 36 Main St., New Milford, CT 06776. Checks should say “Raise the Roof” on the memo line.

Donations can also be made on the GoFundMe page or by PayPal at www.nmchurch.org/raisetheroof.

The church has held numerous events to raise funds for the campaign.

A special evening of storytelling, “Together As One, Celebrating All of God’s Children,” will be held Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. to raise funds for the roof.

International storyteller Valerie Tutson will lead the program, geared for children and adults, at the 36 Main St. church.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
