Burnham School in Bridgewater recently held its last-day-of-school barbecue.

The event was hosted by the Kibbe family, assisted by Burnham PTO parents.

Featured on the menu along with hot dogs and watermelon was salad made by Kathy Gold and the staff at the New Milford Hospital cafeteria.

Locally grown organic vegetable produce was supplemented by the lettuce grown by the students in the Friendship Garden at the school.

The lettuce was planted in the spring as part of the Youth Program sponsored by the Roxbury-Bridgewater Garden Club.

To entice all the children to sample the salad, a giant diamond-cut paperweight was buried in the salad. The "diamond" was won by fourth-grader Anna Balleck.

The other children received pocket-size "diamonds" from Principal Cathy Colella as the "Pocket Diamond" poem was read by Garden Club member Adrienne Caruso.

Also representing the Club's Youth Committee were Dr. Peter Jameson, designer of the Friendship Garden, president Ann Wagner and former president Sharon Faanes.
