BRIDGEWATER — Work is under way on the new cafe at the Bridgewater Village Store and more.

From the post office on the store’s north end to the renovated bank section on the south the signs of progress are apparent. Greg Bollard, the store and Maywood estate vice president, is hopeful that a mid-summer grand opening will happen.

Interior work included consolidating the cooking area and baking area in the rear of the former bank space. That area should be completed within six weeks, Bollard said.

“Then I plan to slide the Village Store operation into that foremer bank area,” Bollard said. “It will be smaller than before but once that is moved we will start structural work and shoring up the rest of the building. She’s 120 years old and needs some gentle work done. I’m targeting mid-summer for a grand opening.”

The cafe will offer Maywood wines along with light fare.

In November 2014 voters in the town repealed the local prohibition against alcohol sales, voting to allow such sales in restaurants. It is hoped this will help the restaurant thrive and bring economic vitality to the town of some 1,700 residents.; 203-731-3352
