BRIDGEPORT — A local man awaiting trial for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman in Milford was back in custody Wednesday after police said he forced his way into another woman’s home, ripped her baby from her arms and then wrapped a plastic bag around the woman’s face.

Christopher Frank, 33, of Cowles Street, was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation and risk of injury to a child.

During Frank’s arraignment Wednesday afternoon, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Bove urged Superior Court Judge Tracy Lee Dayton to set a high bond.

Frank’s lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Ashley Miller, while not commenting on the allegations, urged leniency, pointing out that Frank is a lifelong resident of the area.

But Dayton agreed with the prosecutor.

“The allegations here are horrifying,” she said. “I find he is a danger to the community.”

The judge ordered Frank held in lieu of $750,000 bond and continued the case to Feb. 10.

According to the report of Officer Caitlyn Hracs, Frank allegedly forced his way into the woman’s Bridgeport home on Tuesday night . He pulled her baby from her arms and then began punching the woman in the head and chest, the report states.

Frank allegedly then grabbed the woman by the hair and pulled her to the ground where he wrapped a plastic bag around her face and head allegedly in an effort to suffocate her, police said.

The woman managed to pull the bag from her face and began screaming for help, the report states.

Officers arrived at the scene a short time later and found the woman, bruised and battered, crying hysterically with the baby in her arms, the report states. Police said they arrested Frank a short distance away.

Police said Frank had previously been issued a protective order to stay away from the woman.

Frank, who has a prior record of assault convictions, is awaiting trial in Milford on a charge of third-degree assault on a pregnant person, according to court records.
