Bethel festival, sidewalk sale this weekend
The 30th Annual Summer Festival & Sidewalk Sale starts Friday and runs through Sunday on Greenwood Avenue.
Merchants along the street will have sales racks and tables in front of their stores. Folk musicians will play Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Bethel Fire Department will have a fire truck demonstration from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday and a time for kids to touch and learn about fire trucks Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On the Bethel Library lawn will be three busts of P.T. Barnum for residents to vote on. One of the busts will be chosen as a model for a bust of Barnum that the town will have made to sit at P.T. Barnum Square. The vote is sponsored by the Bethel Historical Society.
On Saturday, the library book sale will take place along with storytelling and book readings at the library. From noon to 2 p.m. Y105 radio will have a live feed at P.T. Barnum Square. At 2:30 p.m. the ice cream eating contest will take place and at 3 p.m. a bubble gum blowing contest will occur. Both are on the Gift Cottage lawn.
"Each year for the last 12 years, we've had large turnouts," said Patricia Smithwick, Bethel Chamber of Commerce president. "You can't beat the stores doing 40 percent off sales. Both Republican and Democratic candidates will be on hand with the election year."
Smithwick said the merchants are hoping for a good sale this year.
"You have to be a smart shopper in this economy," she said. "This is the perfect opportunity."
