The Little Britches 5K run/walk will take place May 19 in Bridgewater.

The event will begin at the Bridgewater fairgrounds at 100 Main St. South and wind through the back roads of town.

The race, which will honor the memory of Little Britches co-founder and former Bridgewater resident Betty Lou McColgin, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration will open at 8 a.m.

A kids' fun run will be at 11 a.m.

Advance registration is $20; race-day registration is $25.

Proceeds will benefit the not-for-profit Little Britches Therapeutic Riding program, which has sites in Roxbury, Woodbury and Litchfield.

The first 200 registrants will receive T-shirts and gift bags.

Awards will be given for first overall male, first overall female, and six age divisions.

The event is sponsored in part by the Connecticut Community Foundation and Interstate and Lakeland Lumber.

Founded in 1979 by the late McColgin and Sharon resident Peg Sweeney, Little Britches has provided equine-assisted activities including therapeutic riding and driving to hundreds of children with special needs over the past 34 years.

The program serves more than 80 riders from 16 towns. It features the expertise of eight therapeutic riding instructors, one therapeutic driving instructor, one occupational therapist and one speech therapist.
