Family and friends of longtime New Milford resident Frank Becker Jr. gathered recently to hold a benefit event.

The June 6 fundraiser was hosted at the United Methodist Church in New Milford to help out Mr. Becker, who was diagnosed in March with a rare bone marrow cancer.

Proceeds were to help defray costs of the many medical expenses during the course of Mr. Becker's treatments.

In attendance was a representative from "Be the Match," a national bone marrow donor organization.

Approximately one-half of the patients awaiting a necessary bone marrow transplant receive one, according to officials. Mr. Becker is one of the fortunate recipients.

More than 30 people registered at the event to become bone marrow donors.

"The fundraiser was a huge success," said Cindie Niemiera, a family friend, "generating over $13,000 and more still coming in.

"A special thanks to chairwoman Trish Skelly," Ms. Niemiera added, "and the many other people who helped to make this event such a success."
