WHEELS aims to “provide the highest quality transportation for senior citizens and citizens with disabilities in the Greater New Milford area to their non-emergency medical appointments,” according to its mission staement.
More than 20 volunteers who drive WHEELS’ insured vehicles, including a wheelchair accessible bus.
The organization serves the greater New Milford area, but can transport to out-of-town medical facilities as far away as Yale in New Haven.
“I have been driving for the program for over eight years,” said volunteer Rich Power.
“When I retired from teaching after 36 years, I attended a retirement seminar and one of the things we were told was that we would probably have to make new friends, and I have.
“The office staff, the other drivers and the clients we transport have become my new friends. I really enjoy my volunteer time and I look forward to doing it for years to come.”
