To The Editor:

We certainly agree with Mr. Fred Silverman's letter supporting community food drives.

We know summer is a particularly difficult time for food banks. There are fewer collections and the need is great, especially for children who usually participate in subsidized breakfast and lunch programs at school.

For the past three summers, Paradice Classic Cruisers and Union Savings Bank have hosted "Thanksgiving In July" at the Park Lane branch to benefit the New Milford Food Bank.

Many boxes loaded with non-perishable food items were donated by the entrants and spectators at this car, motorcycle and truck show. We delivered them to the food bank, along with all of our proceeds, to supplement the pantry's needs.

Peg Molina, the director of Social Services, told us this event "makes a huge dent in getting us through the summer months."

Last year, 34 local businesses supported the show with donations of money and goods. This is a community event and we encourage community involvement.

Any organization, business, faith community or individual that would like to be a sponsor or help out may contact us at or visit Union Savings Bank at the corner of routes 109 and 202.

Mr. Silverman, we are personally inviting you to join us for "Thanksgiving In July" Saturday, July 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the bank.

It is a fun time for a great cause.
