An annual poster contest on recycling hosted by the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority resulted in recognition for numerous Greater New Milford-area students.

In its fourth year, the contest climaxed with Hayley Virbickas, of Bridgewater, selected as the grand prize winner, as reported in the May 6 Spectrum.

Her poster is displayed on two area billboards this month.

In a contest open to children in K-12 grades in Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield and Sherman, the towns served by HRRA, youths were asked to draw a poster showing "what you recycle to help the Earth," the theme chosen for this year's contest.

Michael Iannucci and Mark Kibbe of Bridgewater were respective third place and honorable mention finishers.

Maxfield Branson and Jacob Finch of Kent earned respective first and third places.

Sophia Rago, Alyssa Law, Kayla Burkey and Katie Som of New Milford each claimed a second place finish.

"Part of our mission is to increase recycling in the region. There's no better way to increase recycling than to make sure children know about it," said Cheryl Reedy, director of HRRA. "Kids are the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable and excited recyclers."
