Appreciates those who helped with 9/11 ceremony

To the Editor:

On behalf of New Milford's 9/11 Memorial Maintenance Committee, I would like to thank all who participated in our ceremonies helping to make it a success.

I'd like to recognize all of New Milford's first responders (ambulance, fire and police) for their dedication and sacrifice to our community.

Thanks to Sgt. Warren Hengel, U.S. Marine Corps, who assisted the KWVA, Chapter 11 of Danbury, in the changing of the colors.

The new flag was raised by New Milford Community Ambulance corps president Donna Hespe, Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 fire Chief Jim Ferlow and New Milford police Chief Shawn Boyne.

Curtis Thompson sang the National Anthem, and the invocation was given by the Rev. Michael Moran of the First Congregational Church.

Thank you to guest speakers including Mayor Patricia Murphy, who read a proclamation from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, state Sen. Clark Chapin (R-30th) and state Rep. Cecilia Buck-Taylor (R-67th), who presented memorials, and state Rep. Richard Smith (R-108th).

The St. Francis Xavier Church choir sang a song, composed by Doreen Gray, dedicated to 9/11.

Thanks to Deacon Roland Miller of St. Francis Xavier Church who volunteered to give the benediction.

To close the ceremony, St. Francis Xavier Church's choir sang "God Bless America" and Patrick Maguire played the bagpipes.

Thanks to Will Holding for preparing the site for the ceremony and to Jim Fairchild for the sound system.

The public was invited to place flowers, purchased/donated by Stop & Shop, on the monument.

Finally, a special thanks to Tammy Reardon, Peter Orenski, Cheryl Bonis, Walter Bayer and Patrick Maguire, whose assistance helped to make our ceremony a reflective time.
