Anthony V. Hapanowich, 85, of Sherman, died Aug. 28 at Danbury Hospital.

He was born Jan. 19, 1928, in Sherman, to the late William and Jessie Siskey Hapanowich.

A lifelong resident of Sherman, he owned and operated Happy Acres Farm in Sherman.

He served the town of Sherman first as a selectman from 1973 to 1992 and then as first selectman from 1992 to 1997.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He is survived by a brother, Robert D. Hapanowich, of Sherman; a sister, Josephine S. Yarrish, of New Milford; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Irene Faix, of Wingdale, N.Y. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Hapanowich and Walter Hapanowich; three sisters, Blanche Yarrish, Louise Stone and Florence Benson; and a longtime friend, Joe Pruchnik.

Burial was at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford.

Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
