SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Two pedestrians were fatally hit by separate vehicles at the same spot around the same time Tuesday morning in southwestern Missouri.

Police said the incidents happened on the Chestnut Expressway in Springfield, killing a 48-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. Investigators determined the man was hit first shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday by a white pickup truck, which did not stop. The woman then ran into the road to help the man, and both were hit by a car which dragged the victims a short distance, police said.

The second driver stopped and has cooperated with the investigation, police said. Authorities are still searching for the suspected pickup and driver first involved in the crash. Police said the truck is likely to be missing a passenger side mirror.

Police had not released the names of the people killed by early Tuesday afternoon.
