Washington principal bids farewell

A familiar face will be leaving Washington Primary School before the new school year.

Gail Prelli will depart Aug. 26 after 11 years at the helm at WPS principal.

WPS head teacher Sue Ubaldi will take over as interim principal.

Ms. Ubaldi has been at the school 13 years and served as head teacher, filling in for Mrs. Prelli when she was absent, for the last 10 years.

"It's a fantastic opportunity," said Ms. Ubaldi. "I love the children and the community in general.

"The families are supportive and wonderful to work with. They all put their kids first."

Mrs. Prelli has accepted a professorship at the University of Bridgeport.

"I've been in public education 36 years, with 20 of them in building administration," she said Tuesday. "This will give me the opportunity to continue my research in educational leadership."

For the past year, Mrs. Prelli has taught as an adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

Starting in January, she taught a doctoral course at the University of Bridgeport. This summer, the university offered her the full professorship.

"This all came together very recently," she said. "The opportunity to continue to learn and grow has always been appealing to me."

Mrs. Prelli said she will miss the faculty, staff and students of Washington Primary School but this opportunity was too personally fulfilling to pass up.

"I find the students in colleges today want to make a difference," she explained. "They have their eyes to a goal. It is an exciting group to work with."
