Replacement of the town of Washington's highway garage has moved one step closer.

An appropriation of $350,000 from the town's general fund balance was approved Oct. 1 at the annual town meeting toward building a garage on the same site along Blackville Road (Route 109).

In May, a fire destroyed much of the town's fleet of highway trucks, mowing equipment, maintenance equipment and the garage.

On Sept. 17, the Zoning Board of Appeals approved a zone change allowing the town to rebuild a larger highway garage in another area on the property.

Fleet replacement was financed with $400,000 approved toward road maintenance in the vote on the 2012-13 budget in May. The replacement of one large highway truck had already been included in the budget.
