Amanda Payne, a sophomore at The Gunnery in Washington, recently spent five days working in New Orleans as part of the Rustic Pathways program.
There, along with 18 other teens, she volunteered her services to locals affected by Hurricane Katrina.
She worked on farms and in homeless shelters, charter schools and museums.
On Amanda's second day, she worked at a charter school with students in fourth to eighth grades.
"That was an eye-opening experience," Amanda said. "It made me realize how lucky I was to go to boarding school. A lot of the kids there were working under their grade level because Katrina had held them back."
