SHERMAN — Taxpayers approved $35,000 toward operating expenses for Happy Acres Farm during a town meeting Saturday.

The funding — which First Selectman Don Lowe said passed “almost unanimously,” with only two people voting against it — will cover the farm’s operating expenses during the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2020, and ending June 30, 2020.

“The $35,000 was more of a housekeeping item,” Lowe said. “No money can be spent from the Happy Acres operations fund or restricted fund without getting permission via town meeting.”

To “move more efficiently,” he said, the town always authorizes $20,000 for upcoming expenses like repairs at the state of each fiscal year “so we don't have to keep going to the voters.”

But with the upcoming leave of the farm’s current tenants and need for a new property manager, Lowe said, “we felt we needed to authorize a greater amount.”

“We haven't spent $35,000 — but it can be spent if necessary,” he said.
