SHERMAN — Madalyn Smith was named the recipient of the Sherman Historical Society’s 2019 Gloria Thorne Scholarship.

The scholarship — named after long-time Sherman Historical Society volunteer, Gloria Thorne — is awarded each year to a high school senior or individual furthering their undergraduate education in a four-year college, who has volunteered their time and support to the historical society.

Smith has been active with the Sherman Historical Society since she was a fourth-grader in the Kids@Cobbler Shop summer program.

After years of hands-on learning as a camper, Smith volunteered as a counselor for the program and even helped cater the historical society’s annual meeting.

Smith is now a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she is majoring in civil engineering.
