Scale model of solar system to be unveiled

The John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford will unveil its scale model of the solar system tomorrow (Saturday).

Following a brief ceremony at the Route 7 south observatory, located on the New Milford High School campus, the planets along with plaques giving information about each one will be installed at various locations around town.

The result will be a model of the solar system scaled to size and distance from the sun.

Festivities will kick off at 1 p.m. with a greeting by Bill Quinnell, comments by Superintendent of Schools Dr. JeanAnn Paddyfote, Dr. X. Hammell, PTO representative Kibby Ginn, Monty Robson, Cecilia Page and Bob McCarthy.

Participants will be welcome to tour the solar system following the ceremony.

Only a handful of communities in the world have such a science and teaching tool, according to observatory officials.
