Nominations for two annual awards honoring the late Maj. Stephen Reich are being sought from the Washington and Region 12 community.

The awards are presented annually to a Shepaug Valley School senior and to a citizen of Washington who demonstrate character, service, leadership and achievement.

Reich grew up in Washington, graduated from Shepaug Valley High School in 1989 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1993.

He was commanding a U.S. Army Special Forces rescue operation in eastern Afghanistan when his Chinook helicopter was shot down June 28, 2005, killing all 16 aboard.

Stephen Reich Memorial Award

This year's award to a Shepaug student will be presented at a May 21 schoolwide assembly open to the public.

Nominations from the public are encouraged and should be sent to Scott Werkhoven at or mailed to Shepaug Valley School to his attention.

Nominations should include a brief description of students' qualifications for the award, connection to the students and contact information.

Major Stephen Reich Award for Exceptional Citizenship

"The award recognizes a Washington citizen who stands out among many people who give so much, in so many ways, to our community," Werkhoven said.

As in past years, the committee will present the award on Memorial Day during the ceremony in front of Bryan Memorial Town Hall, following the parade.

Nominations should be in writing and chronicle the nominee's contributions in as much detail as possible.

Nominations may be submitted in one of three ways: 1) Visit and click on "Submit a Nomination;" 2) by mail to Sheila Anson, Town Clerk, Town of Washington, PO Box 383, Washington Depot CT 06794; or 3) hand deliver to Anson's town hall office.
