A sprawling power outage hit the Greater New Milford area Monday at 9:02 a.m., leaving much of that town, Bridgewater, Sherman and Kent without power.

Connecticut Light & Power reported two substations were down -- Rocky River on Route 7 in New Milford and Bull's Bridge on Route 7 in Kent.

Power was partially restored by 9:50 a.m.

Tracy Alston, CL & P spokesperson, said at 10:30 a.m. significant progress was being made restoring power to customers.

"At one point we had some 17,000 customers without service," Ms. Alston said. "Now we're down to 1,300."

Details about the cause of the problem at both substations were expected to be available by 1 p.m.
