MONROE — Fire officials responded to a fire that originated in the basement of a Wheeler Road home early Saturday morning.

Firefighters from Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, Stepney Fire Department, Stevenson Volunteer Fire Company and White Hills Fire Company arrived on scene around 4:30 a.m. and knocked down the fire with a single line.

The fire was contained to the basement area so there was no damage to the rest of the house, said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Catalano.

Because there were no hydrants in the vicinity, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue was requested to respond but ultimately was not needed.

Huntington Fire Co. 3 provided station coverage.

A family of three as well as a dog and a cat were able to safely exit the home. Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service and American Medical Response Bridgeport were on hand to treat firefighters if needed.

The town’s fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
