Loaves & Fishes stays strong to its mission

Countless folks at various intersections in their life have found warmth, a good meal and, in many cases, friendship at the Loaves & Fishes Hospitality House of New Milford.

This summer, the volunteer-run program located since 1989 in the basement of the Richmond Citizen Center celebrated the serving of more than 300,000 meals through its 28-year history.

To recognize the milestone, and to honor Biddy and John Roger, a New Milford couple who for more than 27 years directed the soup kitchen, a buffet party was hosted Sept. 23 at St. John's Episcopal Church's parish hall.

Past and present volunteers, contributors, benefactors and guests numbering about 150 gathered amidst a spirit of love and their shared mission.

The Rogers have stepped down from their roles, but Loaves & Fishes is still a family affair, with their daughters, Molly Sherman and Jessica Keizer, serving as able assistants to the new director, Lisa Martin, a family friend.

Among those on hand for the party was Sherry McAuliffe-Pilch, one of the volunteers who helped found the soup kitchen in 1984.
