John Ramsey Engelberger, 47, of New Milford, died Aug. 29, 2009, at his home. He was the husband of Susan (Tucker) Engelberger.

Mr. Engelberger was born Sept. 23, 1962, in Nashua, N.H. He graduated from Brookfield High School, where he was active in soccer, track and hockey.

Mr. Engelberger's passion for sailing led him to graduate from the Chapman Nautical School in Florida and, as an experienced sailor, he taught sailing lessons at Sail Newport in Rhode Island.

He then attended Savannah College of Art and Design. While living in Georgia, he met his future wife, Susan.

In his later years, he was employed by Consolidated Controls Corporation in Bethel and El Segundo, Calif. Most recently, he was a professional in the construction industry, working throughout New England.

Mr. Engelberger had a yearning for adventure and was fortunate to be well traveled. He made friends in many parts of the world.

He was known for his love and devotion to his wife and family, his do-it-right work ethic, his spontaneity and lust for life in his friendships, and his eagerness to help anyone in need.

In addition to his wife of four years, Mr. Engelberger is survived by his father and mother, John and Lula Josephine (Gathings) Engelberger, of Brookfield; two sisters, Jan and Kim; and uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews in Connecticut, Georgia, Rhode Island, California and Germany.

The Honan Funeral Home of Newtown was in charge of arrangements.
