It might be too early to claim parity has arrived in New Milford Parks & Recreation men's touch football, but opening-week action surely pointed in that direction.

Defending champion H & R Block and perennial power YardApes Landscping both took it on the chin Sunday at Marx Park as the 47th season of the local six-man grid loop made its debut.

In the day's doubleheader opener, Gargon Construction outlasted the landscapers, 26-18, while in the nightcap, Sports Page Cafe outscored the taxmen, 32-27.

There will be no games Sunday because of the Labor Day holiday but the league will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 9 with a twinbill at Young's Field. The Family Laundry will take its season bow at 6:30 p.m. vs. Gargon and the Sports Page will test YardApes at 7:45 p.m.

Sunday's results:

Gargon Construction 26, YardApes Landscaping 18

Peter Billias fired three touchdown passes and teammates Shawn Pennywell and Dennis Rinaldi latched on to two six-pointers apiece for the construction crew.

Pennywell's three interceptions and Thomas Calhoun's two sacks highlighted the Gargon 'D.

YardApes' Juan McGee registered two pass thefts, returning one to paydirt, and also contributed a TD pass reception. Teammate Mike Portunato chipped with a TD catch and an interception.

Sports Page Cafe 32, H & R Block 27

Dan McCauley muscled four tocuhdown passes and ran for another score to lead the stooltoppers to victory. Brother Matt had two pass pickoffs and a pair of six-point catches.

The defending champs rode the four-touchdown passing of Mike Kersten, who found Keith Lipinsky for one six-pointer and three PATs.
