Starting tomorrow (Saturday), Connecticut telephone customers with 860 and 203 numbers will have to change their ways.

To complete local calls, callers must dial the area code along with the telephone number. All local calls in Connecticut currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed with 10.

In addition, automatic dialing equipment now programed with seven-digit telephone numbers will be reprogrammed to use the new dialing procedure. These would include fax machines, alarms and security systems, mobile phone contact lists, call forwarding settings and voice-mail services.

The state Department of Public Utility Control ordered two area code overlays to add a 945 area code to the area served by 860 and a 475 area code to the area served by 203. These new area codes will be assigned at a future date.

Customers' present telephone numbers, including their area code, will not change. What is a local call now will remain a local call.

Those dialing 911 need only dial 911.
