The Democrats in Washington set their slate July 23 without naming a candidate for first selectman.

"This is not an endorsement of [incumbent Republican Mark] Lyon," said Jane Boyer, chairman of the town's Democratic Town Committee. "We didn't find a capable person who wanted to be first selectman."

Mr. Lyon is serving his first term as first selectman and has announced his intention to run for a second term.

The GOP endorsed him at its July 21 caucus.

"I think the fact that the Democrats are not running a candidate for the first selectman's seat is an indication of the fine job Mark's been doing," said Joan Lodsin, chairman of the Republican Town Committee.

Incumbent Democratic selectman Nicholas Solley was endorsed by the Democrats to run for a fourth term and Republican Jimmy Brinton has been endorsed by his party to run for a selectman's seat.
