Danbury’s South Street School principal earns national award
DANBURY — The principal at South Street Elementary School is among 10 in the country to earn a national award.
Principal Carmen Vargas-Guevara received the 2020 Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. Her school was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School for its progress in closing achievement gaps. She has been principal since 2017.
Vargas-Guevara and the other principals were selected from the 367 Blue Ribbon schools in the country and will be honored during the National Blue Ribbon Schools virtual awards ceremony on Nov. 12.
The award recognizes school leaders who are “who are committed to education as a powerful and liberating force in people’s lives,” the U.S. Department of Education said Monday when it announced the winners.
Principals are nominated by their school communities during the final stages of the National Blue Ribbon Schools application process.
Other principals who won are from Arizona, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Hawaii.
