DANBURY — An elderly man was saved by a fast-acting volunteer firefighter following a serious crash outside the mall Saturday.

Hawleyville volunteer firefighter Reese Moffett came upon the scene of the crash near the entrance to the Danbury Fair Mall where a silver sedan smashed into a cement pole stanchion.

Donning his turnouts and personal protection equipment, Moffett approached the damaged car and found an unconscious elderly male driver inside.

Moffett broke one of the car’s windows to gain access to the driver, who was unconscious and having respiratory difficulty, according to the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company.

When police arrived on scene, Moffett gave them an update and continued to support the patient by holding his airway open until Engine 26 and EMS arrived.

“Reese’s actions were crucial in keeping this man breathing until the paramedics arrived,” the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company wrote on Facebook.
