Clatter Valley, Renegades enjoy the Nutmeg spotlight

A pair of youth sports teams earned gold at the Nutmeg State Games amateur sports competition last month in Danbury.

The New Milford Renegades' 10-year-old baseball team captured the title in their age division and a U-11 girls' soccer side known as Clatter Valley captured top honors in their division.

The Renegades represented New Milford Youth Baseball/Softball and were coached by Joe Vaughey, Mat Ryan, Carl Profita, John Meyer and Dave Gesualdi.

The New Milford youths recently competed a 26-4 season also featuring championships in the Southbury Memorial Day tournament and the Brookfield Jimmy Fund tournament.

The Clatter Valley distaff booters were sponsored by New Milford Parks & Recreation and coached by Greg Marsan and Jessica Halas.

The girls outscored their two foes during preliminary matches by a combined 12-0 count and then edged FUSA of Fairfield, 1-0, in the title match, outshooting their shoreline foes, 18-0, in the process.

The game-winning goal was registered by Jessica Robbins off a superb assist from Annelise Gawlak.

In other Nutmeg State Games action, former New Milford High School wrestler Steve Colville, 40, came out of a 22-year retirement to win the open 125-pound division gold medal.

The New Milford Thunder youth lacrosse team, coached by Greg LaCava and Peter Lalli, earned a silver medal thanks to the efforts of Tyler LaCava, Matt Lalli, Tyler Kirkwood, Nick Capriglione, Dillon Ryan, Tommy Lang, James Caldwell, Evan Souza, Adam Hiravy, Quin Lamendola, Frank Palmer, John Marchese, Thomas Marchese, Tucker McMullen, Logan Ryan and Kyle Roberts.
