Charles Robert Pennington, 49, of Yardley Pa., formerly of Warren, died Aug. 30, 2009, after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Mr. Pennington was born in New York, raised in Warren, and was happy in his adopted home in Yardley.

An award-winning student of Kent School, he graduated from Haverford College and continued his education at Boston University, receiving his Ph.D. in archaeology.

While his passion was excavating in the Middle East, it was interrupted by the war and he began a new career as a design engineer at SRA International, Inc. in Warminster, Pa.

Mr. Pennington had a rich intellectual and literary life which he shared with his family. His love for his wife and two boys was immeasurable, and he touched the lives of all he met.

Mr. Pennington is survived by his wife, Mary Dieter; two sons, John and Thomas, of Yardley; his parents, Harold and Helene (Hogan) Pennington, of Warren; two brothers, Douglas, of Northfield, Vt., and James, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Caroline Valle, of McCall, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held today (Friday) at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 47 West Afton Ave., Yardley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home of Yardley is in charge of arrangements.
