Cava, Steers vie for Board of Ed seat in Roxbury
Roxbury voters will go to the polls Tuesday, June 4, to vote for the town's representative to the Region 12 Board of Education.
Referendum hours will be noon to 8 p.m. at Roxbury Town Hall.
Cava, an attorney, is finishing his first year on the board. Steers, a private teacher, holds advanced degrees in education and therapy.
Cava has two children, a Shepaug Valley High School graduate and a Shepaug sophomore.
Steers has three adult children who went through the Shepaug school system and five grandchildren who have graduated or are now in the system.
"I believe in our school system, our teachers, our parents and our young people," Steers said. "They're willing to stand up and speak and they need to be listened to. I want to provide that ear."
"My young people have turned out so well and its partly because of these schools," she added. "I believe in Shepaug."
Cava has brought 29 years of real estate law experience to the board. He serves as chairman of the board's lease and labor negotiations committees.
He believes the questions surrounding possible consolidation of the elementary grades into one facility is "a complicated one."
"We face a number of challenges brought on by declining enrollment, tough economic times and a sea of changes in education curriculum and the manner in which it is delivered (digitally)" as well as state mandates, Cava said.
"Less important than a particular configuration is choosing a course which balances our educational program with its fiscal impact," he added. "It is about striking the proper balance and using data to guide decisions and not emotions."
