New Milford Board of Education member Tom Brant resigned Feb. 12 from the board.

Mr. Brant was among the first responders to Sandy Hook Elementary School the day of the mass shooting, Dec. 14.

"After much deliberation and consulting with professionals regarding the events that took place on 12/14/2012," Mr. Brant wrote in his resignation letter, "I no longer believe I can meet the expectations required to serve on the Board of Education."

He was elected as a Republican in November 2011. His vacated seat will be filled by a fellow Republican.

"On behalf of the board, I want to thank Tom for serving the community," said Wendy Faulenbach, Board of Education chairman. "He was an absolute pleasure to work with and he will be missed."

Pete Bass, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said Monday the RTC is in the nomination process at this time to find someone for the seat.

Once chosen by RTC vote, the name would be presented to Mayor Pat Murphy.

Mayor Murphy would then have the option of presenting the nominee to Town Council for possible confirmation.
