Attic searches in many of our older area homes may likely turn up their share of surprises.

Diane Quarford, of New Milford, experienced one of those moments recently.

While scouring the upper reaches of an old home occupied by her family at 66 Northrop St. in Bridgewater, she turned up an 1860s-era New York Times special edition featuring its in-depth coverage of the American Civil War.

Ms. Quarford at first thought it to be just any old newspaper until her eyes studied the front page and trained in on a photo of Abraham Lincoln.

She plans to see if the newspaper has a special value considering its antiquity and subject matter, and expects eventually to donate it to a local historical society.
