STAMFORD Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church will distribute over 30,000 pounds of food on the West Side at its 150 Fairfield Ave. location from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“Come by and get a box; there’s no questions asked,” the Rev. Robert Jackson Jr. said of the upcoming drive.

This isn’t the first food distribution the church has hosted during the COVID-19 pandemic, but for this coming weekend, Jackson’s congregation has upped the stakes.

“This is by far our largest giveaway to date,” Jackson said.

Throughout the pandemic, Bethel A.M.E. targeted 500 of fill-in-the-blank as a goal. For example, the church gave out more than 500 coats during its autumn jacket drive. In December, volunteers distributed more than 500 toys.

But on Saturday, they’re planning for way more than 500.

With the help of partner organizations — particularly the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state Department of Agriculture — the church plans to distribute 1,400 boxes of food.

There are so many boxes, each weighing about 22 pounds, that Bethel A.M.E. expects to have a forklift on site to transport the boxes. The National Guard will help deliver the pallets of non-perishable goods to the church parking lot earlier that day.

Jackson said community members are encouraged to drive to the giveaway, given the size and weight of the boxes. However, the church welcomes walk-in visitors as well. Food boxes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Though the congregation is not accepting food donations for the upcoming giveaway, those interested in volunteering at the food distribution can contact the church’s office at bethelstamford@optimum.net or call (203) 348-3879.
