BRIDGEPORT — Two people were hospitalized and one cat is dead after a fire in the city late Thursday night, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire shortly after 9 p.m. at the corner of Wade Street and Wade Terrace. Dispatch reports indicated 911 callers said the fire was at Peking Restaurant on Wade Street. But Deputy Fire Chief Lance Edwards said the fire was at Bombon’s Market, 256 Wade St.

“First unit reported heavy smoke coming from a a one-story commercial building,” Edwards said.

Firefighters were faced with a bit of a challenge; metal roll-up doors had to be cut for the fire units to gain entry into the building, he said. Once the firefighters got through the roll-up doors, the fire was extinguished shortly after.

Primary and secondary searches of the dwelling were negative, Edwards said.

“Two tenants from the apartment building next door were transported to the hospital for evaluation,” he said. “One cat perished in the fire.”

No one was displaced by the blaze, he said. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
