Ruth Batstone, 100, had started several businesses

Ruth Helen Batstone, 100, of Kent, died Sept. 20, 2009, at The Kent Health Facility. She was the wife of the late William Batstone.

Mrs. Batstone was born March 12, 1909, in Kent, daughter of the late Archibald and Augusta (Page) Wing.

Community and church activities were always an important part of her life.

Mrs. Batstone started one of the first nursery schools in Kent for children. She opened and operated the Dutch Oven Bakery by the railroad station and, following that, opened a small restaurant, Country Kitchen, in Gaylordsville.

She was involved in the Historical Society, DAR, genealogy, and a doll club, and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Kent, where she started a memorial garden.

Mrs. Batstone is survived by six children, Elizabeth Roberts, of Springfield, Mo., Marion Moxley, of Richmond, Va., Polly Janowiec, of Richmond, Va., Medora Matson, of Kent, Jeremy Batstone, of Wake Forest, N.C., and John Batstone of Aurora, Colo. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will take place at the First Congregational Church, Kent, Oct. 31, 2009, at 1 p.m.

The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
