‘Lion King’ tour due in Hartford for third time Aug. 1-19
HARTFORD — Not all the summer theater action is in parks, at The Goodspeed or at Ivoryton Playhouse. The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, located close to the State Capitol in the Insurance City, has a special engagement of “The Lion King” that will run from Aug. 1-19.
A Bushnell representative said people may assume that because it’s “The Lion King,” it’s sold out already, but as of a few days ago there were still thousands of seats available for the sizable run in Hartford.
The show’s can’t-miss tunes include, of course, “Hakuna Matata,” “The Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” In addition to those Elton John and Tim Rice songs from the film, there are three added John-Rice tunes and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.
The colorful production features Mark Campbell as “Scar,” Gerald Ramsey as “Mufasa,” Mukelisiwe Goba as “Rafiki,” Nick Cordileone as “Timon,” Greg Jackson as “Zazu,” Ben Lipitz as “Pumbaa” and Jared Dixon as “Simba.” The role of “Young Simba” is alternated between Joziyah Jean-Felix and Salahedin Safi and the role of “Young Nala” is alternated between Danielle W. Jalade and Gloria Manning.
While seats are also available from reseller sites, The Bushnell reminded buyers recently that bushnell.org is the only official retail ticket outlet for all performances. So you’re on your own if you deal with a reseller (it’s an issue if there are time changes or lost/stolen tickets).
The show’s director, costume designer and mask co-designer Julie Taymor continues to play a big part in overseeing the show’s successful production. She was the first woman to win a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical.
The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford, Aug. 1-19.
