Twenty-nine nonprofit agencies in the greater Danbury area, many serving the New Milford area, have received grants totaling $181,225 from the Union Savings Bank Foundation.

The grants are "consistent with Union Savings Bank's mission of providing support to local community organizations that provide health care, address basic human needs and promote educational achievement," according to a bank statement.

"I was honored to be part of the USB Foundation this year," said Cynthia C. Merkle, Union Savings Bank's president. "I'm looking forward to hearing from our award recipients and how their projects have made a difference in the communities we continue to serve."

The 2014 grants will support programs and assistance including individual and family health; economic and personal stability; youth development and education; meals to the needy; shelter and housing assistance; art and nature education and a number of other services to help those with mental and physical disabilities.

In 1999, the USB Foundation made its first six grant awards, totaling $33,000.

Since then, it has expanded its geographic reach, scope and mission and awarded nearly $2 million in total grants.

"It has been my privilege to have the opportunity to present our foundation's grant awards supporting the communities we serve," said Fran Dattalo, Union Savings Bank CEO, who was set to retire at the end of December.

"This has been one of the greatest and most fulfilling parts of my job," he added, "and I leave knowing the bank's mission and foundation support will continue under the leadership of my successor, Cindy Merkle."
