SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Invitae Corp. (NVTA) on Monday reported a loss of $40.5 million in its fourth quarter.

The San Francisco-based company said it had a loss of 78 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 61 cents per share.

The genetic testing company posted revenue of $25.4 million in the period, which topped Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $25 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss widened to $123.4 million, or $2.65 per share. Revenue was reported as $68.2 million.

Invitae shares have dropped 31 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $6.30, a decrease of 29 percent in the last 12 months.
