-The VNA Northwest Thrift Shop in New Preston will hold a bag sale Nov. 27 through Dec. 4.

Patrons will have the opportunity to fill large bags at a cost of $5 each with clothing for men, women and children.

Kitchen and household items, along with books, movies and music are also sold at the Thrift Shop.The store, located in the Armoury Building at 233B Litchfield Turnpike (Route 202) in New Preston, is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donations may be dropped off at the Thrift Shop during business hours or at the VNA Northwest at 607 Bantam Road, Unit F, in Bantam Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

-Western Connecticut Dental Arts in New Milford will hold an open house Dec. 3 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The open house will be held at the business located at 120 Park Lane, Unit B201.

-Dental Associates, which has an office in New Milford, recently held its seventh annual Halloween Candy Buy Back Program.

On Nov. 3, 1,447 pounds of candy was collected at its sites in the Greater New Milford and Danbury area.

At its New Milford site, 345 pounds of candy was collected.

The children received $2 per pound of donated candy.

Half of the candy will be donated to various local social service agencies in Danbury, New Milford, Newtown and Trumbull who like to use the candy in holiday baskets for their clients.

The other half of the candy will go to Operation Gratitude, a volunteer organization based in California that collects candy from similar Halloween buyback programs across the U.S. and includes it in care packages they send to soldiers overseas.

After reading about the Candy Buy Back Program in the local newspaper, Timothy Kelly, of New Milford, who recently returned from Iraq, took up a collection at his church, Calvary Chapel in Southbury, to purchase candy to donate to the program.

-Sherman resident James A. Philipakos, a mortgage originator with Bank of America Home Loans in Danbury, has been named 2009 Affiliate of the Year by NFCAR, the Northern Fairfield County Association of REALTORS, Inc.

The award was presented to Mr. Philipakos Sept. 16 at the Tarrywile Mansion in Danbury during NFCAR's quarterly meeting.

The Award was given "with appreciation and sincere gratitude for services rendered to the real estate profession in 2009."
